A
Master Plan Community Showcasing
a Contemporary Interpretation of
Mid-Century Design
Master Plan Community Design, Mid-Century Home
Design This master planned community is a partnership
with a relatively small, local builder. The builder wanted to offer
the market a distinctive home design. He was willing and eager to
take a risk and move away from the ubiquitous adobe-style stucco
and red clay tile roof homes that permeate and saturate this area.
He wanted to create a contemporary interpretation of mid-century
home design, specifically, ranch style. This was both appealing and
challenging. The existing lots were narrow, so the home design had
to be based on a small footprint and therefore needed to be efficient.
The plans have virtually no hallways and at their core is a great
room into which the kitchen opens. All ceiling heights start at nine
feet. Windows are tall and are used to the absolute extent allowable.
Property line wall heights are minimized in the front to promote
social interaction. Patio areas exist both front and back where possible.
Structurally, TJI's are used instead of trusses so the ceilings vault
upward and allow for the use of clerestory windows. An office/computer
area is set up just off the great room for easy access and easy monitoring.
The homes are comfortable with a sense of spaciousness.
