This was a comfortable home, perhaps twenty-five
to thirty years old. The kitchen was original, so it was time for
a re-design. We gutted it. I love gutting a space. One can almost
glean what the contractors were thinking at the time just by studying
their work. The space then becomes a blank canvas. The wall between
the kitchen and living room was removed and replaced with cabinet/counter
top peninsula. The rarely-used coat closet was also removed and the
adjacent wall opened to make the entry hall less claustrophobic.
The drop ceiling was torn out and all the existing electrical and
mechanical hidden therein redirected. A new four by four skylight
allows daylight to pour in. Various exotic woods were used to trim
the custom cabinetry. A tile back splash also offered color and interest.
The remaining support column was shrouded and transformed into a
light tier which connect with a floating soffit/transom housing up
and down lighting.
