Custom Staircase, Introducing a Loft into a
Space
Too often, Architectural Design is never introduced into the
process of planning and constructing our homes. Thought,
reason and creativity give way to ease and economy. This project
is a good example. It is a long, narrow two bedroom two-story condo.
The bottom floor consists of the living area in front, dining room
in back, and in between an over-scaled stairway/fireplace which dominates
the entire space and makes it seem small and fragmented, even though
it's entirely open to the second floor ceiling. The upstairs bedroom
is off this space over the lower bedroom. Our design solution consisted
of removing the stairs and fireplace and replacing them with a more
open staircase leading to a functional loft. This would allow for
an almost completely unobstructed vista front to back and an open
loft space which could serve as an office, library, entertainment
room or an extension of the upstairs master.
