five
rooms transformed into
a great room and a kitchen
Custom Kitchen, Island with Seating,
Great Room, Entertainment Area
Architecturally, the challenge on this project
was to re-design a space containing five rooms into one great room.
Existing was a foyer, a sunken living room, a family room, dining
room and kitchen. This approach to architecture is as common as it
is inefficient. The foyer was unusable, therefore wasted space. The
living room and dining room were rarely used, instead, most of the
living occurred in the family room. The kitchen was too small and
lacked sufficient storage. Our proposed architectural design for
this home saw the removal of all walls. The space was re-engineered,
requiring a single steel column to support new glue-lam beams. This
column was hidden in a new light feature which was then embedded
in a corner of a large island. The kitchen was moved to the interior
walls of the home to more centrally locate it. This allowed us to
tap into the plumbing of the master bedroom. The sunken living room
was filled in, and became the entertainment area. A wet bar was placed
in the corner where the old kitchen once rested. All of the elements
- cabinetry, island, wet bar, entertainment center - were custom
designed and fabricated.
