Kitchen Renovation, Two Islands, Drop Ceiling
The
client's kitchen - as supplied by the builder - had never been satisfactory
to her. The island was too small, cabinetry
was lacking both in quality and quantity, counter tops were a cheap
laminate, and the built-in desk was useless. Our design solution
began with completely gutting the existing. New cabinetry would be
designed with contemporary lines and a rich cherry finish to match
the existing dining set and buffet table. The existing island would
be replaced with one slightly larger topped with a curved granite
counter top to maximize work area. The same granite would be placed
on all lower cabs including a new, larger island which would serve
to connect the kitchen with the dining room both physically and socially.
The large island is curved as well to maximize function and aesthetics.
A window seat is added in the bay window which once was occupied
by a small table and chair set which was awkward and redundant. A
partial drop ceiling (transom) is introduced to bring the space to
a human scale that the existing vaulted ceiling could not do. The
transom would also serve as housing for both up and down lighting.
